This isn't just another list.
This is our curated guide to the very best SEO content writing tools we personally use and recommend. (I’ll also point out my own personal favorite.)

Let's get started.
In This Article
What Are Content Writing Tools?
Content writing tools are any software that helps you create better articles, blog posts, essays, or any other written content.
But when we talk about SEO content writing tools, we're talking about something much more powerful.
These aren't just spell checkers or grammar editors. They’re specialized tools designed to help you create content that is well-written for your audience and optimized to rank high in search engines like Google.
Think of them as your digital co-pilot for content creation. They can help you with every stage of the process, including:
- Researching what your audience is searching for.
- Generating new ideas and outlines when you have writer's block.
- Optimizing your article with the right keywords and structure.
- Checking for readability, tone, and grammatical errors.
- Ensuring your work is original and free of plagiarism.
Ultimately, the goal of using content writing tools for SEO is to take the guesswork out of the equation.
Instead of just writing and hoping it ranks, these tools give you a framework to consistently create high-quality content that drives more traffic to your website.
Why Should I Use SEO Content Writing Tools?
You might be wondering what's the whole point. I mean, you can just write, right?
While this is technically true, using content writing tools can make a huge difference. (And that's coming from someone who's been doing SEO and writing for 6+ years.)
Here are a few reasons why I think content writing tools are a game-changer:
Save Time
Writing good content takes time. Content writing tools can significantly speed up the process. For example, instead of spending hours researching keywords, a tool can give you ideas in a few minutes. This means I can write more content in less time.
Improve Content Quality
We all make mistakes, and sometimes our writing isn't as clear as it could be. Tools can catch grammar errors, suggest better words, and even help you write in a way that's easier for everyone to understand. It's like having a helpful editor looking over your shoulder, helping improve your content quality (minus the micromanaging).
Boost Your SEO
This is a big one for me.
If you want your content to be found online, it needs to be optimized for search engines. Many of the tools I’ll review in this article offer features that help you prime your content for better performance on search engines. This helps drive more traffic to your site and reach your other SEO goals.
Overcome Writer's Block
We've all been there—staring at a blank screen, not knowing what to write. Some tools can give you ideas or even start writing for you, which can be a huge help when you're stuck. It's like having a creative partner to bounce ideas off of.

Keep reading for my full review of why we love these tools and to see all 12 powerful options.
1. All In One SEO (AIOSEO)

Okay, we might be a little biased on this one, but we built All in One SEO (AIOSEO) to be the most powerful and easy-to-use SEO toolkit for WordPress—and that includes robust content writing tools we use ourselves every single day.
While AIOSEO is a full suite of tools for everything from technical SEO to schema markup, its on-page SEO features are specifically designed to help you create content that ranks.
And it all happens right inside the WordPress editor you're already familiar with.
Sounds pretty good, right? For step-by-step instructions on how to install AIOSEO, check out our installation guide.
So, let’s dissect some of my favorite writing features built into the AIOSEO plugin.
AI Assistant
I’ve been wanting an AI blog post generator in WordPress for a long time. However, I’ve been disappointed with the output of the other tools available on the market.
That all changed when AIOSEO released its AI Assistant. This features put a prompt field directly into the WordPress editor, so you can ask it to write pretty much anything you want.
I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve created an entire blog post in under 5 minutes. And, it was a good one.
To use it, you just open the AIOSEO – AI Assistant block.

Type in your prompt (the more detailed, the better), and click Generate.

The AI Assistant will create text—in seconds. If you’re happy with the result, you can click the Insert button and it will put the copy into individual blocks right in the WordPress editor. (You can also delete or regenerate the results.)

What I love most about this tool, though, is that you can take it so much farther than just writing first drafts.
You can:
- Add new sections that dive deeper into a specific topic
- Write FAQs that answer common user questions
- Include key takeaways that summarize your most important points
Not to mention, you can tell it what keywords you want to optimize for, making SEO a breeze.
It’s honestly the best content writing tool for SEO I’ve used that leverages AI in a smart way inside WordPress.
Need images? AIOSEO has a tool for that too. Its AI Image Generator can create beautiful, original images to compliment your content right in the WordPress editor.
AI Content
Speaking of SEO, one of the hardest parts of content writing is summing up your entire post in a compelling SEO title and meta description.
You have to be concise, include your keyword, and write something that makes people want to click.
With our AI Content, you can instantly generate a list of high-quality meta titles and descriptions based on your content.
Just click the AI Generator in either the SEO title or meta description fields.

I also love how you can select the tone and audience for your metadata.

You can also use AI Content to write:
- Social media posts
- Email copy
- Key points (for summaries or TL;DR sections)
Both AI Assistant and AI Content are available to paid and free users. For free users, you’ll have to buy credits (you have 100 free credits to try it out).
Honestly, I could keep going, but I know we’ve got other content writing tools to cover, so let me just quickly recap some other awesome writing features in AIOSEO:
- TruSEO Analysis: Get live feedback on your SEO as you write in the WordPress editor.
- AI Writing Assistant: See how competitors use related keywords to boost their SEO.
- Link Assistant: Get internal linking suggestions without having to scour your site.
- Author SEO: Boost your E-E-A-T signals by optimizing your author profiles.
Overall, AIOSEO is the best content writing tool for lean marketing teams, bloggers, solopreneurs, and more. It enables you to conduct most of your content creation and optimization tasks on a single platform, WordPress.
Best for: WordPress users who want a complete, integrated suite of SEO and AI writing tools without having to leave their post editor.
Pricing: Free version available. Paid plans start at $49.60/month.
2. SEOBoost

SEOBoost is another highly-rated content creation and management tool on the market. You can use it for most tasks in the content lifecycle, from scheduling, planning, managing, and optimizing. This makes it a one-stop shop for your SEO content creation workflow.
Regarding content writing, the core features of SEOBoost include:
- Content brief creation: Define content goals and outline structure, optimize for keywords, and more.
- Topic reports: Get a detailed on-page SEO analysis for your keyword.
- Keyword performance: See how your content is optimized for a particular keyword.
- Competitor analysis: Get insights into the on-page optimization of the top ranking articles.
The tool also features a content audit function that scans existing URLs and provides recommendations for optimization. This makes it the perfect solution for content marketers looking for an easy-to-use and budget-friendly content optimization tool.
Best for: I'd recommend SEOBoost for content creators, SEO specialists, and agencies who are serious about getting their content to rank. It's especially good for those who want detailed, data-driven insights to optimize their writing.
Pricing: SEOBoost offers a free demo and a 14-day free trial. Paid plans start at $30/month.
3. Semrush SEO Writing Assistant

Semrush is a popular all-in-one digital marketing tool used by millions of marketers. While it’s mainly known for keyword research and competitor analysis, the tool also has features to help you write content. One of these is the SEO Writing Assistant.
This tool works seamlessly as a Google Docs extension and within WordPress. Some of its key features include:
- A built-in plagiarism checker
- Readability and engagement analysis
- Word count target tracking
- And more
It also suggests semantic keywords and notifies you if you're overusing keywords.
What sets Semrush’s SEO Writing Assistant apart is its advanced use of artificial intelligence (AI) for content optimization. Powered by natural language processing (NLP), it analyzes your draft in real time and offers smart suggestions to enhance your writing.
Best for: Agencies needing an all-in-one solution.
Pricing: Semrush paid plans start at $119.95/month. However, to use the SEO Writing Assistant, you must be on the higher plans starting at $229.95.
4. Grammarly

Grammarly is another powerful content writing tool worth adding to your content marketing toolkit. It ensures your content is free from grammar and spelling mistakes, so you can publish with confidence.
Grammarly also goes beyond basic proofreading. It helps you:
- Improve sentence structure and readability.
- Minimize passive voice.
- Make your writing more concise.
The result?
Content that’s easier to read and more engaging. This leads to higher return visits, longer dwell times, and ultimately, better search engine rankings. (Google factors these engagement signals into its ranking algorithm.)
Grammarly’s true strength lies in its advanced AI, which combines machine learning (ML) and natural language processing to do more than correct grammar. It understands the tone and intent behind your words, offering personalized suggestions that evolve as you write. This helps you communicate more clearly and effectively.
Pro-Tip: Customize your dictionary and style guide. Take a few minutes to add your company name, industry-specific terms, and brand words to its custom dictionary. If you have a premium plan, set up a style guide. This trains the tool to match your brand's voice and saves you from correcting the same “errors” over and over again.
Best for: Grammarly is a must-have for anyone who writes online. It's essential for ensuring your content is professional and easy to understand, which indirectly helps your SEO by keeping readers on your page.
Pricing: Free. Paid plans start at $12/month.
5. SurferSEO

SurferSEO is a popular content writing tool that helps you write content that ranks on search engines. It analyzes what's already ranking high for your target keywords and gives you a detailed plan to create content that can compete.
The whole idea behind it is to create a content strategy based on data, not assumptions.
SurferSEO's main feature is its Content Editor. You put in your target keyword, and it analyzes the top-ranking pages. Then, it gives you suggestions on:
- Word count
- Keywords to include (and how many times)
- Questions to answer
- And more
It also has a Content Audit feature that checks your existing content and tells you how to improve it.
For example, if I'm writing about “best hiking boots,” SurferSEO might tell me to include sections on “waterproof features” or “ankle support” because top-ranking articles cover these topics.
Best for: I recommend SurferSEO for serious content marketers, SEO agencies, and businesses that want to create highly optimized content that ranks.
Pricing: Starts at $79/month.
6. Jasper

Jasper (formerly Jarvis) is an AI platform designed to help automate most marketing processes. Part of this involves fast content generation, including blog posts, social media posts, ad copy, emails, and more.
Despite the speed, I’ve found the quality of the generated content to be generally very good.
Jasper has many templates for different types of content. You just tell it what you want to write about, give it some keywords, and it generates text for you.
It can also help you rewrite content, improve existing text, and even change the tone of your writing.
For example, if I need to write a blog post about “benefits of meditation,” I can give Jasper a few bullet points, and it will expand them into full paragraphs.
Best for: Jasper is great for content creators, marketers, and businesses that need to produce a lot of content quickly. It's especially useful for those who want to automate parts of their writing process and scale their content efforts.
Pricing: Paid plans start at $39/month/seat.
7. Writesonic

Writesonic is another impressive AI writing tool that helps you create high-quality content for various needs. It's known for its ease of use and its ability to generate different types of marketing copy.
What I love about Writesonic is that it offers a wide range of AI writing tools. Examples include an AI article writer, a paraphrasing tool, a landing page copy generator, and more.
It also has a feature called Chatsonic, which is like a smart chatbot that can help you with research and content ideas.
A common theme that kept coming up when talking to our SEO team about this tool is that they liked the clean interface and how easy it is to use.
Writesonic offers a range of templates for various content types, making it ideal for marketing teams. The quality of the generated content is also generally good, which can save you a significant amount of time on editing.
Best for: Writesonic is ideal for content creators who require a versatile AI writing tool for a wide range of content types. It's particularly useful for those who want a user-friendly interface and a wide range of templates.
Pricing: Paid plans start at $16/month.
8. MarketMuse

MarketMuse is an AI-powered content strategy platform that helps you plan, create, and optimize your content. It's designed to help you become an authority on your chosen topics by identifying content gaps and ranking opportunities.
Content gaps represent topics or keywords your competitors are covering, but you aren’t.
MarketMuse can help you build an impactful content strategy by showing you what topics to write about and how to connect them.
For example, if I'm writing about “digital marketing,” MarketMuse might suggest I also write about “email marketing strategies” and “social media advertising” to cover the topic more completely.
It also gives you a content score for your existing articles and tells you how to improve them.
Best for: MarketMuse is best suited for large enterprises, content agencies, and experienced content strategists who need a powerful platform for long-term content planning and topic authority building.
Pricing: Paid plans start at $99/month/user.
9. Hemingway Editor

Hemingway Editor is a simple yet powerful tool that helps you make your writing clear and easy to read. It's named after the famous writer Ernest Hemingway, who was known for his short, direct sentences.
I use it to make sure my writing is concise, impactful, and easy to understand.
Hemingway Editor highlights sentences that are hard to read, tells you when you're using too many adverbs, and points out passive voice. It also suggests simpler words for complex ones.
The tool also gives your writing a readability score, so you can see how easy it is for people to understand.
For example, if I write a long, complicated sentence, Hemingway will highlight it in red and suggest I break it down into shorter, simpler sentences.
Best for: The Hemingway Editor is ideal for writers, bloggers, or content creators who want to make their writing clearer, more concise, and easier to read. It's especially useful for those who tend to write long, complex sentences and want to simplify their style.
Pricing: The free version is plenty for most writers, including myself. Paid plans are available.
10. ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a powerful AI chatbot from OpenAI that has taken the world by storm. It’s a versatile AI-powered tool that can do a lot of things, including helping you write content for your website.
I've found it to be a great tool for brainstorming ideas and drafting blog posts. I also use it frequently to create outlines for my blog posts, which helps me stay organized.
For example, I can ask it to “create a blog post outline for an article about the benefits of a morning routine,” and it will give me a structured outline with headings and subheadings.
You can even ask ChatGPT to write a blog post on a specific topic, and it will generate a full article for you. However, I’ve noticed that the final result still requires a human touch. You’ll want to review the copy to ensure it’s accurate and original.
Pro-Tip: Give ChatGPT a role before you ask it to do something. Instead of just giving ChatGPT a command, start your prompt by telling it who it should be. For example, instead of “Write about SEO,” try “Act as an expert SEO strategist. Write a simple explanation of SEO for a small business owner.” This forces the AI to adopt a specific tone and expertise, giving you much better results.
Finally, ChatGPT can assist with keyword research by providing ideas for keywords related to your topic. Personally, I prefer using keyword research tools for this task, though.
Best for: ChatGPT is great for bloggers, content creators, and anyone who needs help with writing. It's especially useful for brainstorming, creating first drafts, and overcoming writer's block.
Pricing: Paid plans start at $20/month.
11. Claude

Claude is an AI assistant created by Anthropic. It's great for generating creative content and engaging in more natural conversations. When it comes to content writing, I find it useful for gaining different perspectives on a topic or for producing more nuanced writing.
Claude can assist you in writing blog posts, articles, and other long-form content. It's known for its ability to handle longer conversations and more complex prompts, which is great for developing detailed content. (It also means less prompting since it gets familiar with your style and requests.)
One of my coworkers mentioned that she used Claude to work on one of our sale campaigns and it was really helpful for refining the style. She needed to make the copy more persuasive, and it helped choose the right words to strengthen her message.
Naturally, Claude still requires editing and fact-checking. This is true of all LLMs, though.
Best for: Claude is great for content creators who need a powerful AI assistant for generating creative and detailed content. It's especially useful for those who work with longer articles or need a more conversational AI for brainstorming.
Pricing: Paid plans start at $17/month.
12. LowFruits

While LowFruits isn't technically a content writing tool, I felt strongly about including it on this list.
Keyword research is (or should be) the very first step in the writing process. Without it, your SEO efforts are unfounded and your time could potentially go to waste.
LowFruits is a keyword research tool that helps you find keywords that you can actually rank for. It focuses on low-competition keywords with high ranking potential.
These are keywords that people search for, but not many websites are trying to rank for them, making them easy targets for you.
Pro-Tip: Turn one Keyword into a content hub. When you find a good keyword, click on the “Clusters” tab. This will show you all the related, easy-to-rank keywords on that same topic. It's a pro-level shortcut to quickly build topical authority and own an entire niche, not just one keyword
LowFruits also uncovers “Weak Spots” in SERPs, which are low-authority domains ranking in the top 10 search results. (Very few other SEO tools do this, which is why LowFruits is one of my favorites.)
Overall, it's a super beginner-friendly keyword research tool that's designed to spot easy SEO wins instead of highly competitive, impossible keywords.
Best for: LowFruits is perfect for bloggers, affiliate marketers, and small businesses who want to find easy-to-rank keywords and get traffic quickly. It's especially good for those who are just starting out or who want to expand their content strategy with less competition.
Pricing: Starts at $21/month.
